Oak wilt treatment and prevention

Pruning Guidelines to Prevent Oak Wilt

Oak wilt, caused by the fungus Bretziella fagacearum, is the most devastating disease affecting live oaks and red oaks in Central Texas. The majority of tree loss occurs when the fungus spreads from tree to tree through interconnected or grafted root systems after an infection site is established. New outbreaks begin when beetles transport fungal spores from infected red oaks to fresh wounds on healthy oaks. These wounds may result from wind, hail, vehicle damage, construction, wildlife activity, or pruning. Studies indicate that both oak wilt fungal mats on infected red oaks and the insects that transmit spores are most active in the spring.

Key practices to minimize the spread of oak wilt when pruning oak trees

  • Regardless of the time of year, promptly seal all pruning cuts and wounds on oaks. Any type of wound dressing or paint is effective in preventing fungal infections if applied immediately.
  • Avoid pruning or causing injury to oaks between February 1st and June 30th. However, pruning may be necessary in certain cases, such as:
    • Addressing safety hazards, including dangerous limbs, visibility issues for traffic, or emergency utility line clearance.
    • Repairing storm-damaged or otherwise compromised branches.
    • Removing limbs that rub against buildings, other branches, or need to be lifted over streets.
    • Meeting clearance requirements at construction sites when scheduling constraints apply.
    • Cutting away dead branches that do not expose live tissue.

Non-essential/Cosmetic Pruning

For non-essential pruning—such as general tree maintenance, thinning, or clearance that isn’t safety-related—it’s best to schedule work before February 1st or after June 30th. This timeline can also be dependent on weather conditions.

Dispose of diseased red oak debris immediately by chipping, burning, or burying it.

The safest times for pruning are during the coldest winter days or prolonged hot periods in mid-to-late summer, with late fall being the optimal season. No matter the timing or purpose, always follow proper pruning methods. These include making clean cuts and avoiding harmful techniques like topping or excessive crown thinning. Additionally, disinfect all pruning tools between trees and work sites using a 10% bleach solution or Lysol™ to prevent disease transmission.
