What we observed
Micro-injections and other unapproved methods yield less success when treating for oak wilt. The pictured leaves are from a property in Austin, TX where “micro” applications were performed preventatively. Looking at the documents from the initial treatments, the trees received less than 50% of the required fungicide to protect from disease. The trees were treated preventatively, receiving the injections several months prior to being challenged, so the timing of the applications were correct. However, the micro-injection treatments and dosages used did not provide adequate protection and now the trees are shedding sick leaves throughout the canopies. Unfortunately, these property owners are now responding therapeutically, and in a tough position trying to preserve their trees.
What we recommended
Macro-injections are the preferred method of oak wilt treatment, and the only approved method by the Texas Forest Service, providing the best distribution of fungicide and protection from disease. Additional applications were administered in efforts to increase the levels of active fungicide in several trees, while providing full dosages to other nearby trees yet to be treated. Tree health will be monitored through leaf change to see how the therapeutic trees respond. Trees receiving initial treatments with macro-injections will be reassessed at 18-24 months to determine if any further injections are necessary.
